  1. Goal Setting If you know what you want to do, why do you need to read about goal setting?

  2. Motivation • What motivates you to achieve a goal? • How will you know whether you have chosen the right goal for yourself? • Goals should be energizing, not draining • Ask yourself questions- “Is this what I want to do?”

  3. Motivation (Cont). • Motivation moves you to act on or toward something. • It can come from the inside or from outside sources • You take action and motivation provides the fuel to move.

  4. What Motivates ME? • Motivation is different from person to person. • Comes from within you – intrinsic motivation. • Comes from sources outside of you – extrinsic motivation.

  5. A Motivated Learner • Motivated behavior always involves making a choice. • Motivated learners put forth effort. • Motivated learners are persistent. • Students who are motivated are engaged in the topic – they think. • Achievement comes when a person is motivated.

  6. Overcoming Emotional Barriers • You cannot control external factors. • Target things you can control. • Attitude • Mental Paralysis • Commitment • Are You In the Way?

  7. Goal Setting • What is a Goal? • Group assignment- • Break off into groups and complete activity 3.4 • Why do you need a goal? • Have you Hugged You HOG today?

  8. A Clear Goal is…. • Written • Specific and measurable • What? • When? • Realistic • A practical road map • Short term and long term goals • Anticipates potential problems • Incentives

  9. Developing Action Steps • Identify the most important first step. • Make a commitment to begin the first step as soon as possible. • Be diligent and flexible. • Ask for help when you need it. • Friends • Family • Faculty

  10. Obstacles, Missteps and Detours • Goals are set in the real world, things happen • Common obstacles • Not expecting mistakes • Blaming obstacles for your lack of abilities • Not changing your environment

  11. Locus of Control…. Again! • How does your locus of control impact your ability to achieve your goals? • How does whether or not you have an external or an internal locus of control make a difference?

  12. Conclusion • Motivation is the force that moves you toward your goals • Goals provide purpose • Goals are realistic • Effective goals are written, specific, measurable, realistic and have a deadline • Complete Activities 3.8, 3.9, 3.10 for HOMEWORK!
