First Things first • Cornell Note Taking System • Start now. • Keep up with your notes. • Write the summary later during the same day you take the notes. • Fill in the left side with topics (the title of the PowerPoint slide for example) • Fill in the left side with questions you want answered by the teacher or the text book.

  3. First things First • Summer reading is due tomorrow. • If you have it now, you may leave the assignment in the red box labeled with your period. • Your MLA formatted heading must be on everything you turn in. You may look it up on the internet, or you may look on the side of the box. There is an example there. • Name, Teacher, Class and Period, Date

Dividers, you can make them from card stock and post its or you may buy them. I like the ones with pockets.

Syllabus • The first page of your binder. • The syllabus explains the rigor, scope and sequence of the entire year of instruction. • It explains late work, grading, and expectations for this course. • READ IT. Word for word, all the way through. • If you choose to ignore it, you will find yourself lost and likely regret your decision to blindly attempt this course.

Syllabus • Grading for dual credit: • 90% essays/10% MHS average for semester • Late work accepted with 10% decrease per day late (24 hours) • Example: If you get an 83 on the assignment and it is 2 days (48 hours) late, your grade would be reduced 20%. Which means you would receive a 66.4 on the assignment. • Grading for high school credit: • 60% major/40% minor • Late work accepted with 10% decrease per day late (not including weekends) • Example: If you get an 83 on the assignment and it is 4 days late, but two of those days were Saturday and Sunday, your grade would be reduced 20%. Which means you would receive a 66.4 on the assignment.

Syllabus • You will do the same work regardless of what type of credit you choose (Dual or High School Only). • Expectations are the same for everyone. • Length requirements are the same for everyone. • SO… you might as well sign up for dual credit.  • Scholarships are available for those who qualify. • There are payment plans through Midland College.

  8. Expectations • Listed on a page of your syllabus • Posted on the board. • Please return the separate signature page signed by you and your guardian (the entire page) to Mrs. Wagner by the end of this week. • Violators will be persecuted or prosecuted? Which is correct?

  9. School Rules • Dress conservatively • Do not use your cell phone for any reason. There is a clock on the wall and dictionaries/thesauri on the shelf. • No hats • Drinks: Water only. Must be in closed container.

Dual Credit • You must sign up at Midland College • You must apply at APPLYTEXAS and complete the college application. • Remember your sign in ID and password. • You must then register for English 1301 with Mrs. Wagner at MC or online at www.midland.edu. • If you have questions, counselors can help, or I can after class.

  12. Activity • Alphabetize yourselves.

  13. ALOT Monster • Read the article. • Take notes in Cornell style or in a style comparable which you have invented on the most important parts of the story. • What is the tone of the writer? How do you know?
