  2. 3D-AQS ProjectPI-Ray Hoff (UMBC) • Integrate NASA satellite sensor and lidar data into EPA’s air quality data systems: AQS/AirQuest, IDEA • Provide greater accessibility and usability of satellite and lidar data to users of these systems • Enable monitoring in horizontal andvertical dimensions for forecasting and retrospective analysis Funded by NASA Applied Sciences

  3. 3D-AQS: Current Datasets • MODIS AOD matched to 12 km2 and 36 km2 CMAQ grids • GOES/GASP – fully incorporated • MISR – dataset created by NASA JPL and being incorporated

  4. 3D-AQS: Future Datasets • Ground-based LIDAR data • Test dataset being developed in CMAQ relevant layers • OMI NO2 • Test dataset being prepared and being validated compared to ground-based NO2 data • CALIPSO • Waiting for NASA to reprocess CALIPSO dataset 0.5 Altitude (km) 4 15:00 Time (UTC) 00:00

  7. Giovanni http://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/ • Giovanni is a Web-based application developed by the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). • Giovanni provides a simple and easy way to explore, visualize, analyze, and access vast amounts of Earth science remote sensing and model data. 9. Giovanni Air Quality Available Satellite Data Sets A-Train: CALIOP Aerosol Feature Mask curtain plots, co-registered strips from MODIS, OMI and AIRS OMI NO2 Total and Tropospheric column (0.25x0.25 degree) OMI AOD and UV Aerosol Index (1x1 degree) MODIS TERRA and AQUA total and fine mode Aerosol Optical Depth PM2.5 gridded station data - Acquired at DataFed from EPA AIRNow

  10. Visualizing California’s Wildfires from Space with Giovanni 23-27 October 2007 Data from NASA’s Aura OMI (Tropospheric NO2 and UV Aerosol Index), Aqua AIRS (Total Column CO) and Terra MODIS (Aerosol Small Fraction, Cloud Optical Thickness and Aerosol Mass Concentration Over Land) Tropospheric NO2 Total Column CO UV Aerosol Index OMI OMI AIRS Aerosol Mass over Land Cloud Optical Thickness Aerosol Small Mode Fraction MODIS MODIS MODIS RTP, NC10

  11. Not fully validated (in progress) Giovanni OMI Total and Tropospheric NO2 Column Level 2G (L2G) - 0.25x0.25 degree - original pixel data (binned) - flexibility in data screening and aggregation method Level 3 (L3) - 0.25x0.25 degree - gridded data - better for model comparisons ?

  21. Giovanni Capabilities Basic (one-parameter): Area plot – averaged or accumulated over any data period for any rectangular area (various map projections) Time plot – time series averaged over any rectangular area Hovmöller plots –longitude-time or latitude-time cross sections ASCII output – for all plot types (can be used with GIS apps) Image animation – for area plot Verticalprofiles Vertical cross-sections, zonal means Beyond basics: Area plot - geographical intercomparison between two parameters Time plot - an X-Y time series plot of several parameters Scatter plot of parameters in selected area and time period Scatter plot of area averaged parameters - regional (i.e., spatially averaged) relationship between two parameters Temporal correlation map - relationship between two parameters at each grid point in the selected spatial area Temporal correlation of area averaged parameters - a single value of the correlation coefficient of a pair of selected parameters Difference plots Anomaly plots Acquiring parameter and spatial subsets in a batch mode through Giovanni RTP, NC21

  22. AIRS MODIS 10-6 ppmv Aerosol from GOCART model MISR Parasol CloudSat CALIOP TOMS OMI MLS HIRDLS HALOE TRMM AMSR-E SeaWiFS Giovanni RTP, NC22 Data Inputs Particulate Matter (PM 2.5) from AIRNow Aerosol from MODIS and GOCART model Carbon Monoxide from AIRS Giovanni Instances Models and more… Ozone Hole from OMI Water Vapor from AIRS MODIS vs SeaWiFS Chlorophyll

  27. OMI UV Aerosol Index • Mostly sensitive to absorbing aerosols above the planetary boundary layer (i.e transported smoke plumes) • Work in progress to assess the utility of OMI UV Aerosol Index for understanding AOD/PM2.5 correlations

  28. Giovanni Air Quality Services: AOD/PM2.5 Correlation Maps and Time Series May 2007 AOD/PM2.5 correlation map over the U.S Moderate to good correlation in the eastern U.S May 2007- AOD and PM2.5 Time series over the southeast

  29. Calipso Curtain Plots (A-Train)July 31, 2007: Smoke and Haze over the U.S OMI contours over MODIS AOD. White lines indicate CALIPSO overpass Calipso provides vertical aerosol and cloud information

  30. Smoke over the eastern U.S Aug 13-15, 2007 AIRNow PM2.5(ug/m3) MODIS AQUA AOD OMI UV Aerosol Index- helps identify regions with aerosols above the boundary layer When aerosols are above the boundary we expect the AOD/PM2.5 correlation to be poor OMI AI

  31. NASA 3D-AQS Project: Datasets into air quality relevant formats Completed datasets to AirQuest: • MODIS, GOES, and MISR AOD matched to surface PM2.5 monitor data • MODIS AOD matched to CMAQ 12×12 and 36×36 km2 grids 3D-AQS End User Rankings of Remote Sensing Datasets
