  1. Proposed Schedule Fieldstone Middle School 2012-13

  2. Layout • 8 Period Day • 4 Long periods at 53 minutes each- Core Classes • 3 Short periods at 42 minutes each-Special Area Classes • 1 Lunch at 30 minutes • 2 homebase periods at 5 minutes each • 4 minutes in between each period for travel

  3. Teachers • Core Area teachers teach 4, 53 minute periods for a total of 212 minutes • Special area teachers teach 5, 42 minute periods at 210 minutes (slight adjustments can be made.) • 1, 42 minute period will be designated as team meeting time/duty on an A/B rotation. • Short periods sandwich the lunches to avoid contract violations. 53 minutes needed for prep and lunch for core teachers.

  4. Schedule • 4 different schedules will be developed, with 3 teams following each of the 4 options. • Anticipated teams: • 6 in 7th • 6 in 8th

  5. 7th Grade Schedule Courses: Math- 53 minutes SS- 53 minutes ELA- 53 minutes Science 53 minutes PE- 42 minutes every other day Music-42 minutes every other day ENCORE (TBA)- 42 minutes quarterly ELA/Math Enrichment period- 42 minutes- see next slide

  6. 7th Grade Enrichment Period • Designed as an A/B with most students receiving math on “A” and ELA on “B” or visa versa, but students could receive double in either if necessary. • Read 180 could be embedded into this period for students who qualify.

  7. 7th Grade Enrichment Period • Math Options: • Math X- accelerated students now are in a main stream math class and receive X during this period. • AIS- Students below grade level receive the support they need. • Enrichment- Students that qualify for neither the above receive additional math instruction with a goal of advancing their math competency.

  8. 7th Grade Enrichment Period • ELA Options: • Accelerated English- a new concept that allows qualifying students to work on writing and other English skills at a higher level. • AIS- Reading, writing, or Read 180 • Enrichment-Students that qualify for neither the above receive additional ELA instruction with a goal of advancing their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills

Additional Considerations • This plan will require 6 Math, Science, ELA, SS teachers plus…. • An additional 2.4 FTE to provide the ELA Enrichment and 2.4 to provide the math enrichment. • This will come from: • Savings due to better, current reading support, teachers already designate to provide AIS.

  10. Big Changes Grade 7 • No RICA • Longer Core Classes • Shorter Lunch • AIS built into the schedule • Math X as a separate every other day class • ELA X new program • Additional Math and ELA for all students at their level

Would Language vs. AIS • Students who receive a low level 2 or a level 1 on NYS exams (or other assessment to determine) will be required to take AIS in lieu of WL and begin their WL requirement in grade 9. • Students who receive a high 2 will have the option to take AIS during the school day and forgo WL until grade 9 or take WL and commit to an after school AIS program.

  15. Accelerated Science • Students will no longer take an lab as part of the 8th grade biology regents course. One class a week will be designated to lab which more than meets the 1,200 lab requirement. The remaining 4 days designated to lecture at 53 minutes each would be close to current seat time in Biology. • One day a week funded through SIPT an after school support class will be offered. • This plan saves in staffing, preserves teaming, and makes for a more manageable day for students.

  18. Key Changes Grade 8 • Science Lab for accelerated is offered in a different way. • AIS is built into he schedule for students who are well below grade level proficiency meaning they will take WL in 9th grade. • Teaming • Students able to travel in cohorts
