  1. Top Situational Judgement Test Tips (SJT)

  2. 1. Begin planning early. You can study for the SJT. Understanding the core material at I- MEDICS and studying the practise questions. This exam is as important as any medical exam you've ever taken, so treat it accordingly. Set aside one night per week for it, ideally three months in advance. According to a study that looked at the use of SJT type tests (which are more common in the US than in the UK), "SJTs might be prone to faking, practise, and coaching effects," which, while a potential issue with the exam format, plays into the hands of a hardworking individual who prepares and practises.

  3. 2. Invest time in the wards The SJT was created to assess your decision-making abilities and predict your behaviour on the wards as a doctor. The more time you spend shadowing FY1s on the wards and immersing yourself in their work environment, the more familiar the SJT scenarios will become. The SJT assumes you are already acquainted with the ward environment. The more you see how junior doctors deal with these scenarios, the easier it is to visualise the scenario set in the exam questions and distinguish between good and bad decisions!

  4. 3. Practice timing but don't rush! You have two hours and twenty minutes to respond to 70 questions. Section one (usually the first 43 questions) accounts for two-thirds of the marks, while section two accounts for one-third. Some recommend spending 1 hour 30 minutes on section one and 40 minutes on section two. This is a marathon exam, not a sprint. If you practise answering questions in 90 seconds or less, you will have plenty of time on test day.
