  1. Insects Natalie Conniff Curriculum Topic Spring Session 2013

  2. Awareness To establish an environment that promoted awareness and interest in insects we added books to the literacy area and sang songs about insects.

  3. Awareness We further enhanced the interest in insects by adding plastic insects to the sensory table and we brought in live mealworms.

  4. Exploration The children made a number of impromptu discoveries as they constructed their own understanding of the insect world. One day when we were out on the playground we noticed a large number of ants on the sidewalk. The children spent time observing them and collecting information about what was happening.

  5. Exploration The children found a deep interest in collecting and observing earthworms. Their observations allowed them to begin constructing their own understanding.

  6. Inquiry Once the worms were brought inside the children examined them, made hypotheses about their behavior and compared their thinking with each other. Many of the children had prior knowledge about worms that they brought to the discussions with their classmates.

  7. Inquiry As the session went on the mealworms began moving through their lifecycle and the children had the opportunity to watch it unfold. They carefully investigated the mealworms, pupa, and beetles comparing them to other insects and looking at books for answers to their questions.

  8. Utilization The children incorporated their knowledge of insects into the use of plastic insect parts to depict familiar insects and invent new ones.

  9. Utilization The children explained to teachers and their peers the different parts of their insects (real and invented) and the different functions they serve in our habitat.

  10. Utilization The children also used a variety of artistic mediums to represent their knowledge of the insect world. We drew bugs as a class, children painted insects and other bugs, they made bug houses out of loose parts at the sensory table, and there were many insect drawings added to our class habitat mural.
