  3. Central Servers:What’s in it for me? • Security Management: Differing levels of responsibility depending on skills and needs. • System stability. • Reliable backup. • Universal access (FTP, Drive mapping). • Lower per-user costs

  4. Novell Security Database • NDS- centralized security database of all users, groups, and system resources. • Integrated security in all aspects of design • Hierarchical: security by inheritance. • Distributed management.

  5. Filesystem security concepts • File permissions – SRWCEMFA • File attributes – Ro, Di, Sh, etc. • Trustees and Inheritance • Explicit trustee assignments • Inherited Rights Filters • Effective Rights

  6. Management Tools and Extensions • Explorer extensions of the Novell Client for Microsoft Windows • NetWare Administrator (NWAdmin32.exe) • Command line tools: Filer, Flag, Ndir, Ncopy, Netadmin, Purge, Salvage.

  7. Hands on Exercises Exercises as time allows: • Using the Explorer: • Create a directory • Grant access to specific individuals and groups. Use explicit trustee assignments. • Restrict access to all other users, then test your security. • Repeat exercise using NWAdmin, inherited rights filters.
