  1. Assignment: Box Design The way a product is packaged often determines whether someone will buy it. Consumers like to feel they have made a wise choice.

  2. Not everyone buys a product for the same reason, that’s why designers design for a specific target audience. • Who would by these products? • Dial Soap- Mr. and Mrs. Middle-class. • Sapore Soap- Mr. and Mrs. Affluent and Trendy.

  3. Who is this product designed for? • Children • Teenagers • Adults • Blue collar • White collar Why do you think they used the name “Chosen”?

  4. This product is a “Ready for School” kit. It contains flash cards and other learning aids. • Who is the target audience for this product? • Children • Parents • Parents buying for children

  5. All six panels on a box are important, but its the front panel that sells the product. This is the panel the consumer sees as the box sits on the store shelf.

  6. Since the front panel is so important what information belongs on this panel? • Product name----SATCO • What the product is----light bulb • An eye-catching graphic that depicts the essence of the product----a glowing light • Other product relevant info----40 watts

  7. What information would be inappropriate for the front panel? • Barcodes • Instructions • Ads • Warnings • Ingredients

  8. Wrap-around designs go from one panel to another. • Designers use wrap-around designs to: • give unity to their designs. • help direct the consumer to the other panels.

  9. This product does not use wrap-around designs but still maintains a unified appearance. The designer accomplishes this by using: • A harmonious color scheme. • A consistent style. • Repetition of ideas.

  10. A designer needs to consider what the product will look like on sitting on the shelf in a group. They also consider what their competitors product will look like next to it.

  11. Some designs are made to unite when placed side-by-side.

  12. Food containers need to make the product look appetizing. Designers know that a photograph of their product is much more appealing than a drawing.

  13. Which illustration would be more enticing to the consumer? Mmmmm! Waffles with brown stuff and blue dots! Mmmmm! Waffles with melted butter and maple syrup!

  14. If you were looking to grill a tasty hamburger which product do you think you would buy?

  15. Why do you think this container focuses more on typography than illustration? Perhaps it’s because of the serious nature of the product. People buying health supplies want to know that the product is legitimate.

  16. Some boxes have windows that display the product. Food products often do this when the product is visually appealing, but rely more on photographs when the product isn’t.
