Mary Huber • There's a willingness to separate questions about content, about which one claims expert knowledge, from questions about teaching, about which one does not. • The wisdom of practice in teaching • Disciplinary styles • Not just simply how do students learn, but how do students learn in my field?

  5. Randy Bass • The scholarship of teaching • should be public • should be susceptible to critical review and evaluation • should be accessible for exchange and use by other members of one's scholarly community • teaching "problems" can be investigated (scholarship) and not merely "fixed"

Today's ideas • How education has began using research to understand the learner • How we can use our understanding of our discipline not to "hide" or make opaque how we think and work, but to make our own thinking, working, learning processes and skills transparent to our students • Learn how to create a web based assignment using these ideas and a tool aptly titled "dreamweaver" • Examine classroom research and tools for doing such research

  8. Your assignment • Revise an assignment that you might have used in your class previous to Bush • 1. Re-write the instructions to make it more transparent • 2. Have the student's involved in the research • 3. Make the accountability rubric clear • 4. Put the assignment on a web page using Dreamweaver • use one image • use one table • use at least one link • publish the assignment

Your Assignment • Design in flashlight 10 research questions that might help you understand how students are learning on a given assignment • Design 10 research questions that might get at an understanding of how the changes you are planning to make in your course might have changed student learning
