    1. Take out a sheet of loose leaf paper. Fold it into thirds, the long way.

    2. Unfold the paper. At the top of the page, write the title at the top. Figurative Language

    3. At the top of the first column, write figurative language

    4. At the top of the second column, write definitions

    5. At the top of the third column, write examples

    6. first column, the word is simile

    7. definition: makes a comparison between two unlike things using explicit words such as like, as, resembles, or than

    8. example: I’m like a bird, John is taller than a tree, my rental car is smaller than a coffee table

    9. Draw a line after the first set. Second word: metaphor

    10. Definition: makes a comparison between two unlike things, in which one thing becomes another thing without the use of words such as like, as, resembles, or than.

    11. Examples: My desk is a space ship. My brother is a bear in the morning. My English teacher is a mean, old snake.

    12. Draw a line. The third word is personification.

    13. Definition: A special kind of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human.

    14. Example: The pencil sharpner got angry and bit me. My lunch grew legs and walked away. The desk threw me on the floor.

    15. Next word: idiom No, the word isn’t idiot. Use an “m”, not a “t”

    16. definition: An expression that everyone is familiar with which means something different than is stated.

    17. Examples: He cleaned his plate. It’s raining cats and dogs. She was wiped out after running.

    18. If I were a student at Smithfield Middle School, taking Ms. Schoenhoff’s class, I would immediately think to myself that a quiz would be coming soon. Perhaps it might be coming on Monday or Tuesday. In fact, I would count on it.
