  2. What is it? • The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a landmark piece of national legislation in the United States that outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had been responsible for the widespread disenfranchisement of African Americans in the U.S.

  3. Who Started it? • The voting rights act was enacted by the 89th United States Congress and signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

  4. Who does it affect? • This piece of legislation affects the African Americans by giving them respect and “abolishing” in a sense, discrimination.

  5. Cool Fact!! (: • The Act was renewed and amended four times by Congress, the most recent being by George W. Bush in 2006.
