Come to Calvary’s holy mountain,

LHS 71 CAL293

James Montgomery (1771-1854)

come to calvary s holy mountain
Come to Calvary’s holy mountain

1. Come to Calvary’s holy mountain,

Sinners, ruined by the fall;

Here a pure and healing fountain

Flows to you, to me, to all,

In a full perpetual tide,

Opened when our Saviour died.

come to calvary s holy mountain1
Come to Calvary’s holy mountain

2. Come in poverty and meanness,

Come defiled, without, within,

From infection and uncleanness,

From the leprosy of sin,

Wash your robes and make them white;

You shall walk with God in light.

come to calvary s holy mountain2
Come to Calvary’s holy mountain

3. Come in sorrow and contrition,

Wounded, impotent, and blind;

Here the guilty free remission,

Here the troubled peace may find:

Health this fountain will restore;

He that drinks shall thirst no more.

come to calvary s holy mountain3
Come to Calvary’s holy mountain
  • He that drinks shall live for ever;

‘It’s a soul-renewing flood:

God is faithful; God will never

Break His covenant of blood,

Signed when our Redeemer died,

Sealed when He was glorified.

first reading
FIRST READING

Isaiah 43:16-21 CEV

God promises a new deliverance for his people

R: The first reading for the fifth Sunday in Lent is written in chapter 43 of Isaiah, beginning at verse 16.

isaiah 43 16 21
Isaiah 43:16-21

16I am the one who cut a path through the mighty ocean.

17I sent an army to chase you with chariots and horses; now they lie dead, unable to move. They are like an oil lamp with the flame snuffed out.

isaiah 43 16 211
Isaiah 43:16-21

The LORD said:

18Forget what happened long ago! Don't think about the past.

19I am creating something new.

There it is! Do you see it?

isaiah 43 16 212
Isaiah 43:16-21

I have put roads in deserts, streams in thirsty lands. 20Every wild animal honours me, even jackals and owls.

I provide water in deserts, streams in thirsty lands for my chosen people.

21I made them my own nation, so they would praise me.

This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

psalm 126 cev
Psalm 126CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 126

R: 1It seemed like a dream when the LORD brought us back to the city of Zion.

psalm 126 cev1
Psalm 126CEV

C: 2We celebrated with laughter and joyful songs.

In foreign nations it was said, "The LORD has worked miracles for his people."

R: 3And so we celebrated because the LORD had indeed worked miracles for us.

psalm 126 cev2
Psalm 126CEV

C:4Our LORD, we ask you to bless our people again, and let us be like streams in the Southern Desert.

R: 5We cried as we went out to plant our seeds.

Now let us celebrate as we bring in the crops.

psalm 126 cev3
Psalm 126CEV

C: 6We cried on the way to plant our seeds, but we will celebrate and shout as we bring in the crops.

C: Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.

second reading
SECOND READING

Philippians 3:4b-14 CEV

Already righteous but not yet perfect

R: The second reading is written in chapter 3 of Philippians, beginning at verse 4.

philippians 3 4b 14
Philippians 3:4b-14

Others may brag about themselves, but I have more reason to brag than anyone else.

5I was circumcised when I was eight days old, and I am from the nation of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin. I am a true Hebrew.

philippians 3 4b 141
Philippians 3:4b-14

As a Pharisee, I strictly obeyed the Law of Moses. 6And I was so eager that I even made trouble for the church. I did everything the Law demands in order to please God.

philippians 3 4b 142
Philippians 3:4b-14

7But Christ has shown me that what I once thought was valuable is worthless. 8Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage.

All I want is Christ 9and to know that I belong to him.

philippians 3 4b 143
Philippians 3:4b-14

I could not make myself acceptable to God by obeying the Law of Moses. God accepted me simply because of my faith in Christ.

10All I want is to know Christ and the power that raised him to life. I want to suffer and die as he did, 11so that somehow I also may be raised to life.

philippians 3 4b 144
Philippians 3:4b-14

12I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect. But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize. 13My friends, I don't feel that I have already arrived.

philippians 3 4b 145
Philippians 3:4b-14

But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead. 14I run toward the goal, so that I can win the prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize that God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done.

This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

gospel
GOSPEL

John 12:1-8 CEV

Mary anoints Jesus at Bethany

M: The holy gospel is written in chapter 12 of the Gospel according to St John, beginning at verse one.

C: Glory to you O Lord.

john 12 1 8
John 12:1-8

M: Six days before Passover Jesus went back to Bethany, where he had raised Lazarus from death.   2A meal had been prepared for Jesus. Martha was doing the serving, and Lazarus himself was there.

john 12 1 81
John 12:1-8

3Mary took a very expensive bottle of perfume and poured it on Jesus' feet. She wiped them with her hair, and the sweet smell of the perfume filled the house.

john 12 1 82
John 12:1-8

4A disciple named Judas Iscariot was there. He was the one who was going to betray Jesus, and he asked, 5"Why wasn't this perfume sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?"   6Judas did not really care about the poor. He asked this because he carried the moneybag and sometimes would steal from it.

john 12 1 83
John 12:1-8

7Jesus replied, "Leave her alone! She has kept this perfume for the day of my burial.   8You will always have the poor with you, but you won't always have me."

This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Praise to You O Christ.

1.Take my life, Lord, let me be,

yours to serve you faithfully.

Take my moments and my days,

let them flow in ceaseless praise.

take my life and let it be1
Take my life, and let it be

2. Take my hands, and let them move

at the impulse of your love.

Take my feet, and make them, too,

swift and beautiful for you.

5. Take my will and purpose, too;

they belong, my Lord, to you.

Take my heart; it is your own,

it shall be your royal throne.

take my life and let it be3
Take my life, and let it be

6. Take my love; my Lord, I pour

at your feet its treasure-store.

Take myself, and I will be

yours alone, eternally.

We sing:

When I survey the wondrous cross

LH54 CAL293

Isaac Watts (1674-1748), alt.

when i survey the wondrous cross
When I survey the wondrous cross

1. When I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of glory died,

My richest gain I count but loss

And pour contempt on all my pride.

when i survey the wondrous cross1
When I survey the wondrous cross

2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

Save in the death of Christ, my God;

All the vain things that charm me most,

I sacrifice them to His blood.

when i survey the wondrous cross2
When I survey the wondrous cross

3. See from His head, His hands, His feet,

Sorrow and love flow mingled down:

Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,

Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

when i survey the wondrous cross3
When I survey the wondrous cross

4. Were the whole realm of nature mine,

That were an offering far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.
