  1. The virtualMe FrameworkGuided tour Click on the speaker icons and I will chat to you! Michael Verhaart http://www.virtualMV.com In face to face lecturing information is gathered, knowledge is socially constructed.

  2. Purpose “Can this (lecturer and student) information and knowledge be captured in context using internet technologies?” virtualMeKnowledge is centered on an individual

  3. http://www.virtualMV.com Accessing the system • Create a new user[Join] Community • [Login] if you havejoined earlier, by enteringuserid and password. Survey Sticky Notes • Use [Guest]

  4. The virtualMe’s homepage My image(emphasise connected to a person) [Exit] Annotations (Messages) [Home] [My profile] • From • vMe • Users • For You • Personal vMe Photo Album Topic list

  5. Representing a media objectMMO (Multimedia object) When working with media on the internet, whether images, sound, animation or video it is useful to be able to view the element in different ways. Every media element in the virtualMe is represented by an MMO.

  6. Out of context annotations View A primary goal of the framework was “can information and knowledge be captured in context”, so this leads to creating a structure that allows the virtualMe and visitors to communicate in the system, by adding annotations or messages. Out of context annotations are added to the framework but are not directly attached to content. • Annotations can be • From vMe to everyone • From users to everyone • From vMe to you • Personal

  7. Viewing some content In order to test my ideas the virtualMe framework was developed to assist me in delivering teaching and learning to my students in an enhanced learning environment. That is, I wanted to be able to use it to: • [viewPage] and [viewOHT] Support my face to face lectures, by allowing the content to be displayed in a view suitable for projecting onto a large screen and connecting the underlying notes; • Support my practical sessions using sequential instructions or videos; • [SnipletListAll] Provide students with the opportunity to printout the content in a continuous view so that they would not be wasting large amounts of paper printing one slide at a time; and • Provide a mechanism where the content is dynamic and can be changed or added to by me or annotated by the students.

  8. View Page Next MMO - image View OHT Annotations – In Context Sniplet A piece of content that can be displayed on one OHT MMO - reference

  9. Sniplet in many places A feature of having content stored as a sniplet is that it can be used in several places. This means that when a sniplet is changed, this is reflected wherever the sniplet is used. Annotations will also appear wherever the sniplet is used.

  10. Managing references • When preparing content, extracting the referencing information from the many sources can be a time consuming task. • An MMO can be used to manage this To sniplets

  11. Examples As sniplets can be displayed in many places, I have created a menu item “virtualMe examples”. Feel free to look through these as they are sniplets showing other media types that use the MMO. • Business Card • Multiple references in a sniplet • MMO with Image and sound • MMO with tutorial video • MMO with image and PowerPoint

  12. System customisation While the system has been designed to enable visitors to feel like they are communicating with my virtual presence, it is also important that the users feel like they can customize the system to their preferences. The prototype currently has limited customization but in the future it is hoped that this will be significantly expanded.

  13. Concluding … • That wraps up the virtual tour please fell free to use it at http://www.virtualMV.com . • If you can, it would be really neat if you could help me out with my research. I have a survey that I would like you to fill (you can get to in the sticky note on the first page, or there is a link in the menu system). You will need the survey code which is in the instructions on the first page. • The virtualMe is an evolving framework and has potential to be extended well beyond where it is today, but it does allow me to research and test some of my ideas in a real and tangible way. • So, thanks very much for taking the tourMichael
