Economic Statistics and National Accounts at the undergraduate level At the undergraduate level, all students taking the Bachelor of Statistics degree programme take the following relevant courses: • Time Series and Index Numbers • National Accounts and Income Analysis • Industrial Statistics • Energy Statistics • PPP, External Trade and BoP Statistics • Price Statistics • Distributive Trade and Services Statistics • Financial Statistics

  3. Economic Statistics and National Accounts at the postgraduate level At the postgraduate levelEconomic Statistics and National Accounts is one of the areas of specialisation. Postgraduate diploma students take one course in Economic Statistics andNational Accounts. Master of Statistics students take two courses and write a dissertation on a topic in Economic Statistics and National Accounts

  4. Short courses and workshops In addition to the above regular programmes, the SSP conducts from time to time short courses/workshops to meet specific skills needs of user countries.

  5. Objective of TA Increasing the number of professional staff working in the National Accounts Departments of the NSOs

  6. Strategies • Training to Masters level • Short courses in Economic Statistics and National Accounts • Training Missions • Study Tours/Attachment

  7. Training to Masters level • One to two-year programmes in African STCs • Masters in Statistics with NA as the area of specialisation • Requires fellowships/scholarships

  8. Short term Courses in Economic Statistics and National Accounts • Sub regional workshops hosted by an STC • Trainers from STCs can be supplemented by staff from UNECA & other STCs • Countries need funding to attend

  9. Training Missions • Training missions of short duration to specific countries with special needs can be undertaken • Team of continental advisors in National Accounts can be complemented by staff from STCs hired as short-term consultants

  10. Study Tours/Attachment Financing of staff from countries with challenges to tour and/or attach themselves to the NSOs which are already implementing SNA 2008 to learn from their experience

  11. Strengthening capacity of STCs There is need to strengthen and sustain the capacity of STCs continue delivering the requisite training

  12. Challenges • Inadequate imfrastructure • Lack of fellowhips • Lack of regular training needs analysis and updates. • Inadequacy of equipment

  13. Needs • Fellowships for trainers and trainees • Research funds for trainers and trainees • Development of training materials for the short courses • Funding for Seminars/ workshops/ short courses in priority areas. • Curriculum review • Equipment , Accessories etc. • Computers • LCD Projectors • Software(including ) (renewal of licenses) if necessay. • Text Books/e-books on Economic Statistics and National Accounts

  14. Framework for assistance to STCs Maintain and expand the AfDB’s Statistical Capacity Building Programme
