  3. Colocation • Colocation, also referred to as colo, is a facility provided by a data center that enables a business to rent space for servers as well as other computing hardware. The facilities that are provided in colocation include building, power, cooling, bandwidth, physical security etc. The clients of this facility provide the servers and storage. Space in such a facility is usually leased by the cage, rack, cabinet or room. There are certain colos that have extended their services to include such managed services which cater to supporting their clients’ business initiatives.

  4. Data Center • A data center refers to a physical facility, which is used by companies for housing their data and applications. It uses a network of storage and computing resources which deliver shared data and applications. • To digress, web hosting companies also use data centers. A web hosting company provides the service of web hosting, which renders websites accessible over the internet. The most popular web hosting service providers are usually referred to as the “Best Linux Hosting Company”, the “Best Windows Hosting Company”, the “Best Cloud Hosting Company” etc.

The main and the most common colocation features are mentioned below. • Cross connectivity • Physical security and durability • Redundant power and Internet connectivity • On-site technical support • Guaranteed reliability • Compliance with different types of regulations

  8. Disadvantages of choosing Colocation There are certain drawbacks of choosing colocation. These are mentioned below, in no particular order. • Colocation hosting is more expensive than any basic type of hosting service • The costs incurred initially are high • One needs to purchase one’s own equipment as well as relevant updates • Budgeting is rendered challenging due to fluctuations in monthly costs, which depend on bandwidth usage • It can be challenging to locate a data center that is near one’s location • Server maintenance needs to take place off-site at data center location • Access to maintenance might be less convenient due to time restrictions at data center • One is responsible for maintaining one’s own server. Hence, one needs technically knowledgeable employees.

  9. Tier System The uptime delivered by data centers is usually expressed as one of the following four tiers- • Tier 1- Nonredundant power, cooling and network connectivity • Tier 2- Limited redundancy for power and cooling • Tier 3- Capability to withstand a 72-hour power outage • Tier 4- Capability to withstand a 96-hour power outage
