  2. INTRODUCTION • KTDA is an organization that manages small scale tea farmers in Kenya. Currently it serves over 600,000 small scale tea farmers. We have established presence in Rwanda where we are managing 2 factories. • The organization is spread across all the tree growing areas in Kenya. • Wood fuel as a source of thermal energy is far cheaper than furnace oil which is the only other known reliable alternative. The current furnace oil prices are too high and factories cannot afford considering that the tea market is on a downward trend. The scarcity of firewood has contributed to price hike. • Currently the average consumption per factory is about 13000m3. The average price per cubic meter is Ksh1,800 • To date, the total land acquired by the KTDA factory companies is 19,116 acres, out of which 11,344 acres has been planted .

CHALLENGES • The current land prices are prohibitive and pushing the factories further to the marginal areas. • The productivity of the trees in the marginal areas are low, due to delay in maturity period which lowers the Mean Annual Increment. • The unreliable rainfall patterns in most parts of the country has affected negatively the planting schedules. • The factories need to employ wood forest supervisors to assist in effective farm management. • The efficiencies of boilers in most factories needs to be addressed to reduce firewood consumption hence lower the cost of steam generation. • Attempts to collaborate with Kenya Forest Service towards concessions have been futile.
