  1. Rigor and Writing in Social Studies As you come in, please complete the DO-NOW prompt at your seat.

New Proposed Social Science Standards 4 Major Dimensions of Each Discipline: • 1 – Developing questions and planning inquiry • 2 – Applying disciplinary concepts and tools • 3 – Evaluating sources and evidence • 4 – Communicating conclusions and taking informed action How do these align with the idea that all teachers and content areas teach writing and have students communicate ideas/arguments through writing?

  5. Middle School Complexity Bands • Standards banded by complexity rather than grade levels • Differentiation (p.10-11) • Peruse some of the Middle School Standards within the four disciplines. Notice the varying level of verbs used within the standards. • By the end of 8th grade, students should have practiced and experienced all three levels.

K-12 Inquiry Skills • Evaluating Sources and Using Evidence • Gathering and Evaluating Sources • Developing Claims and Using Evidence • Communicating Conclusions and Taking Informed Action • Critiquing Conclusions • Taking Informed Action Peruse Inquiry Standards (p.13-15) – make list of important nouns and verbs

  7. Grade Level Bands Look through Grade Level Bands (Handouts provided) Compare to current Quarter Plans What changes will we need to make?

  8. Assessment Methods • Create List of how you currently assess for GL SS. • Compare to the verbs within your grade level standards. Which assessments will still work? Which may need to be revamped? • Investigate resources available for new C3 framework.
