Tourist Places in Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a union territory of India which serves as the capital of two neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh was the first planned city of India post independence designed by French architect Le Corbusier and has become a popular tourist destination across the world and known for its architecture and urban design. Some of its tourist attractions are Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden, Capitol Complex and Rose Garden.<br> <br>Chandigarh is located near the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas in north India.<br><br>Chandigarh is considered as part of the Chandigarh Capital Region or Greater Chandigarh, which includes Chandigarh, the city of Panchkula (in Haryana) and cities of Kharar, Kurali, Mohali, Zirakpur (in Punjab).<br><br>Chandigarh is also known as “The City Beautiful”. This term was derived from the city beautiful movement that was a popular philosophy in North American urban planning during the 1890s and 1900s.<br><br>Recently, an article published by BBC named Chandigarh as one of the perfect cities of the world in terms of architecture, cultural growth and modernisation.<br><br>Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex was in July 2016 declared by UNESCO as World Heritage site.<br><br>Chandigarh ranks in one of the highest per capita income cities in India and was reported to be one of the cleanest in India based on a study.<br><br>English is the sole official language of Chandigarh. The majority of the population speaks Hindi and Punjabi.<br> <br>The metropolitan area of Chandigarh–Mohali–Panchkula collectively forms a Tri-city, with a population of over 2 million.<br><br><br>

  8. Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh is an artificial lake in the foothills of the himalayas. A serene water body in the foothills of Shivalik hills surrounded by lush greenery, this is what makes this lake the most popular tourist attraction in the city.

  9. In Sukhna Lake, a cafe is run by CITCO that has both indoor and outdoor sitting from where the scenic beauty can be enjoyed. The lake also has a membership club with laws, indoor games and gym. Boating, rowing, sailing and water skiing can be enjoyed all over the year.
