Excerpts from Abstract ISE 468 ETM 568 Dr. Joan Burtner “This study was divided into two phases with an overall goal of developing a process-driven layout for the laboratory with a streamlined process flow and an effective utilization of resources. In Phase 1, Lean and Six Sigma techniques were used to develop a floor plan which facilitated analyzers to be grouped into “cells” that would improve the workflow. In Phase 2, alternative layouts with different “cell” configurations and staffing levels were evaluated using simulation. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to validate the proposed, process-driven layout.”
Metrics ISE 468 ETM 568 Dr. Burtner Turnaround Time (TAT) Fulltime equivalents (FTE’s) per hour Resource utilization Movement by office assistants and technical staff
Phase 1 ISE 468 ETM 568 Dr. Burtner • Stated goals • Reduce wastes in the system • Utilize physical space more efficiently • Method: DMAIC • Define Measure Analyze, Improve, Control • Development of value stream maps (VSM) • Current state and future state maps • Identification of problems • Variable turnaround times, redundant processes, wasted time, overstaffing, lack of teamwork
Phase 2 ISE 468 ETM 568 Dr. Burtner • Development of discrete-event simulation (DES) model • Data inputs: arrival patterns, setup times for analyzer machine, specimen processing times, analyzer downtimes, other tasks performed by staff • Validation of model by comparing to actuals for one month • Experimentation • Development of three alternative staffing levels • Analysis of results based on utilization and turnaround times • Trade-offs between FTEs and TAT
