  2. OPA’s 2nd Annual 6th Grade Learning Adventure • OPA Champions have a chance to explore the geography and ecology of California’s Catalina Island. • Trip is scheduled for March. • Early morning departure will take the students to San Pedro where they will take a ferry boat to Cherry Cove on Catalina Island. • Students will enjoy the sand, surf and sun while doing hands on learning with C.I.M.I.’s highly trained staff.

  3. What is C.I.M.I? • C.I.M.I is the Catalina Island Marine Institute and is a top-notch learning camp for young learners. • Students learn through experience. • Here, they explore marine life by snorkeling the local waters in the daytime, and at night, to see the variety of sea-life that exists and how they adapt to the changes in time, tides and seasons. • They take part in lab sessions that cover California standards and are led by highly educated camp instructors.. • Nighttime hike where students learn about astronomy and how sailors used the stars to navigate the world.

  4. The Journey to Catalina • Students will take a lovely bus ride to the harbor and then board a Catalina charter ferry to the island. • We land on the Cherry Cove side of the island and begin our Marine Institute Adventure. • The return trip is just as good. Repeat.

  5. Accommodations • Students will be staying in converted military barracks. The room assignments range from 2 to a room to 8 to a room. • Students get to pick their barrack buddies and can look forward to nights filled with friends and fun!!! • No electronic devices or games are allowed. CIMI prefers for students to “rough” it and truly have a camping experience.

  6. Educational Laboratories • A myriad of Educational Laboratories can be found on the lovely Camp grounds. • Labs cover invertebrates, algae, sharks and even microscopic organisms!!!! • All labs are hands on and interactive and are led by college graduates in the respective fields of marine biology and oceanography.

  7. Underwater Exploration • Day time snorkeling is an ADVENTURE!!! • Students get to wear buoyancy wetsuits and can snorkel away to their hearts content. • They will see garibaldis, kelp beds, crustaceans and many other interesting living organisms and sites. • Nighttime snorkeling is for the DARING!!! • The dark cover of night changes the creatures that emerge from the depths!!! • An hour long dive into the dark depths will open up their eyes to the wonders of the sea!!!

  8. Other Activities on Site • Astronomy and nature hike!!! • Learn about navigating with the stars and walk among the native flora and fauna of Catalina!!!! • Movie Night • For those who do not want to partake in the nighttime dive, a movie is an option. • Mountain Hikes. • Come see the decomposing bison.
