States of Matter/Collaborative Learning Goal: To be able to identify the states of matter and some characteristics of each state of matter. Positive Interdependence/Collaborative Student Work The Jigsaw Method
The Jigsaw Method • Organizing students into HOME groups that are responsible to each other for specific information • Utilizing EXPERT groups to assist each student in learning their needed information to assist their HOME group in being successful • Allowing students to work collaboratively to learn
What do we know about the different states of matter? • How many are there? • What are they? • Solid • Liquid • Gas • Plasma • Bose/Einstein Condensates • What is the natural sequence for states of matter? From what to what? • What may dictate the state the matter is in? • (ice skater, freezer) Prime Time I Building Background Knowledge before putting students into groups
Home Groups • Number off in your groups of 4 • One is Solid • Two is Liquid • Three is Gas • Four is Plasma
Expert Groups • Solid Experts will go to tables 1 or 2 • Liquid Experts will go to tables 3 or 4 • Gas Experts will go to tables 5 or 6 • Plasma Experts will go to tables 7 or 8
Expert Groups • You have 7 minutes to answer these 5 questions • Find two examples of your state of matter • Will a change in temperature affect your two selected examples • How? • What is the Arrangement of molecules • State one interesting fact of your state of matter • What is the speed of particles (fast, medium, slow) • What is the type of motion (vibrational, translational, rotational)
Home Group • You now have 8 minutes to report back to your Home group and organize your information for each state of matter (two minutes each) • Each group member must have the characteristics of each state of matter listed on your paper with examples
Grading Rubric • Individual Grade • The student needs to be able to provide what he/she brought back to their home group as the expert • Group Grade • The group needs to be held responsible for the completion of their document as a team
Exit Goal ~ Prime Time II • The use of the Jigsaw method in any subject area: • What topic could you utilize this method of collaboration with? • What should the teacher be doing while the students work in their groups? • How does it help to create set time expectations? • Is every student held responsible, why or why not?
