    3.

    4. Reminder: We are transitioning in this class from a time of fact-finding and discovery to a time of application. How do we put into practice what we have learned?

    5.

    6. Additional input by the class re: What type of character/qualities must an elder have?

    7. Why are these qualities important? Several comments made by Mike Davilla. Qualities/Characteristics of elders important, because: 1) God says they are; 2) they are critical to the success of an elder/eldership fulfilling his role in the church. See Mike’s notes on the church web site.

    8. Biblically, what type of relationship should exist between a congregation and its elders?

    9. How does the Biblical model apply at Hazel Dell? What can we learn that will help us to know what we need to do and the direction we need to go?

    10. Based upon your study, what is it that you are looking for from God’s elders at Hazel Dell?...What do you want to see?

    11. What should elders be looking for from us? What should we be looking for from each other?

    12. Based upon our study together, both personally and collectively, what kind of relationship are the church body and shepherds to have with each other?

    13. Class Input/Responses: Comments by Jim Gillihan: 1st Samuel 8 – Israel wanted Samuel to select a king to rule them, which upset him. God told Samuel that the people were not rejecting him, but God. Acts 16:4 – Thru God’s blessing when the church obeyed Godly leader, the church grew in number and were strengthened in their faith. 1 Thess 5:12-13 – Need to appreciate and esteem those highly in love that diligently labor among you.

    14. Class Input/Responses: Comments by Becky Rose: - Elders selection process typically negative, identifying what characteristics/qualities they don’t have. We need to be more positive and identify their strengths, while still recognizing where the areas they need to grow in. - Need to devise a means to evaluate effectiveness of elders, deacons, ministries; process needs to be fair, honest, but non-hurtful - Relationship should be one of mutual respect Comments by Stacy Shoemaker: - We need to devise ways to make relationship-building with our elders easier; remove barriers. Regular “Elder Notes/Updates” or something similar need to be instituted.
