  2. Sponges • Sponges are part of the Animalia Kingdom • They are also known as Phylum Porifera • Sponges are invertebrates, which means they have a backbone

  3. Reproduction • Sponges can reproduce by mating and asexually • The asexual way is called budding • It grows buds that detach from the body and forms another sponge • They can also reproduce by mating • Most sponges are Hermaphrodites

  4. Reproduction • They release reproductive cells that looks like smoke that goes to another sponge • The reproductive cells fertilizes the egg • When the egg is hatched, the larva swims around • Later, it settles on a rock and grows into an adult

  5. How Sponges Move? • Adult sponges cannot move because they are grown permanently on the rock • But when sponges are still larva they use their cilium (tiny hair) to swim

  6. How To They Eat? • Sponges eat by filter feeding • They absorb tiny particles into the holes of the sponge • Their flagella inside them let the food in

  7. Interesting Facts • A new type of sponge is discovered every year. • One of the biggest sponges ever was almost 10 feet wide. • When a part of a sponge breaks, the broken part will make a new sponge. • The chemicals that a sponge produces are being used to find a cure for cancer and other diseases
