  2. Limbal Cell Damage • PURPOSE  • To explore in an animal model: The different degrees of tissue damage, generated by UV, With different times of exposure to UV radiation With and without protecting the limbal area Normal Guinea Pig Limbal area

Limbal Cell Damage • MATERIAL & METHOD Guinea Pigs were chosen as the animal model Divided in four groups All ethics regulations for animal research, as well as internal hospital regulations were fulfilled The groups were divided according to the time of exposure and the use of protection over the limbus. UV was applied in Only one eye, using a CSO CXL device, previous application of riboflavine. Limbus was protected using an stained contact lens, perforated in the middle, exposing the central cornea. After 1 week, all animals were sacrificed and common Histologic stains and tunnel Studies (Looking for oxidative stress) were practiced.

Limbal Cell Damage • RESULTS: 16 guinea pigs, were treated and sacrificed, Group1: (10 minutes of uvA exposition without limbal protection),Showed no caliciform cells, with oedema and inflammatory infiltration. Group2: (10 minutes with limbal protection). More caliciform cells Group3: (30 mins. Exposure to UV without limbal protection) Almost no caliciform cells, intense oedema & inflammatory cells- Group4: (30 mins, with protection).Slight diminishment of caliciform cells, limited edema and inflammatory cells.

  8. Limbal Cell Damage • CONCLUSIONS: It is well known that cells are damaged by UV radiation, the present study shows damage to the limbal cells in the Guinea pigs model. The tunnel stain, showed different degrees of damages according to the time of exposure, and the protection or not of the limbus. CXL is gaining popularity, even when we don’t know the potential risks in the long term, specially for pluripotential cells like the limbal ones, so we should at least Protect them in every procedure, since we still haven’t tested the effect of time.
