  1. The Concept • Challenge not remediation will make a difference for those young people who are least likely to attend college.

  2. The Facts • The “20 credit threshold” is a key breaking point between students who complete a college degree and those who never finish college.

  3. 5 Core Principles • ECHSs are committed to serving students underrepresented in higher education • ECHSs are created and sustained by a local education agency, an IHE, and the community, all of whom are jointly accountable for student success

  4. 5 Core Principles • ECHSs and their higher education and community partners jointly develop an integrated academic program so all students are one to two years of transferable college credit leading to college completion. • Career Pathways and Programs of study that lead to a certification, a 2-year degree, and/or up to 60 hours toward a 2- or 4-year degree will be developed.

  5. 5 Core Principles • ECHSs engage all students in a comprehensive support system that develops academic and social skills as well as the behaviors and conditions necessary for college completion. • College and Career Advising • Counseling Support • Academic Support • Advancement Via Individual Determination Program

  6. 5 Core Principles • ECHSs, IHE, and community partners work with intermediaries to create conditions and advocate for supportive policies that advance the early college movement.

  7. Common Instructional Framework • Collaborative Group Work • Writing to Learn • Questioning • Scaffolding • Classroom Talk • Literacy Groups

  8. AVID • The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICR method, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading.

  9. Woden ECHS • Woden ISD, in partnership with Stephen F. Austin State University, has applied to the Texas Education Agency for the designation of an Early College High School

  10. When? • Woden ECHS applied to begin with the graduating class of 2015 (next year’s 8th grade class) • Each year a new cohort of students would be added until the entire high school is transformed into a college & career readiness campus.

  11. Who? • Woden ECHS will be open to all students beginning with next year’s 8th grade cohort. • The common instructional framework and the AVID strategies will begin to benefit all students in the 2010-2011 school year.

  12. The Next Steps • Woden ISD must wait for approval and designation by the Texas Education Agency. • To help our students with their college and career planning, individual advising of students will begin during May.
