Instructional Strategy Research Assignment: A Demonstration • This Instructional Strategy demonstration includes two different lesson plans: one for the general education instructor to conduct with his/her students and another for parents to conduct with their children at home. • It is imperative to state that both lesson plans that are included in this demonstration are aimed at promoting awareness regarding the fully included students’ disability—Downs Syndrome.

Instructional Strategy Research Assignment: A Demonstration • The following areas may were considered when developing this assignment: Reading—Decoding, Fluency, or Comprehension, English Language Proficiency, as well as Social and Adaptive Skills. • This is designed to support a general education instructor in teaching a student with special needs who spends most of his day in a general education setting

Lesson Plan for Teacher: We are More Alike than Different • Objective: Students will learn about Down Syndrome Awareness. • Studentswill first learn about how individuals with downs syndrome are more alike than different through a group activity in which students will read and answer questions using key words and phrases pertaining to the subject at hand.

  5. Lesson Plan for Teacher: We are More Alike than Different • Parentswill then help their children learn and at the same time be aware of down syndrome by including a photograph of themselves with their family, as well as five activities that they do as a family.

  6. Lesson Plan for Teacher: We are More Alike than Different • The list can include recreational activities such as camping, swimming or sports, but can also include hobbies, pastimes, and traditions.

  7. Lesson Plan for Teacher: We are More Alike than Different • Materials: • 1. Pre-printed booklet pages • 2. Pencil and eraser • 3. A stapler • Activity: • 1. Students first read the booklet and then answer questions pertaining to Down Syndrome Awareness. • 2. Next, students will staple booklet pages together and take them home to perform the next step of the activity with their parents.

Lesson Plan for Parents: We are More Alike than Different • Objective: Parents and students will learn together about down syndrome awareness by placing a family photograph and listing five things they do together as a family. This list can include recreational activities such as camping, swimming or sports, but can also include hobbies, pastimes, and traditions. Students are to take home booklet to be shared and presented to the class by the teacher and then displayed on a designated space on a wall for a given amount of time.

Parent helps brainstorm family activities and the student writes them down on booklet • 3. Glue family photograph onto assigned place in booklet • 4. Student returns booklet to teacher
