Five Main Ideas about Definition Essays • 1.Definition creates boundary on a value, thing, emotion or concept by asking and answering “What is it?’ and “What isn’t it?” • 2.Formal definition: a statement generalizing the class  that the word is a part of, followed by its own distinctions, much like a definition out of a dictionary. • 3.Stipulative definition: Depends on how it is used in the sentence.  Specifies on the direct way the author is using the word in order to suit a larger purpose. • 4.Extended definition: explores in the full complexity a purpose or idea and then draws boundary around it until it gains a complete and precise meaning.  Some strategies for making a unique definition include: Synonyms and Negation • 5.TheEtymology is the word’s history, which illuminates the meaning and shows how the definition of the word changed overtime.
