  2. Summary • NWEA results show that more than half of CPS students in grades 2-8 are at or above the national average attainment level in reading for their grade • Math scores improved for students in grades 2-8, but still lag slightly behind the national average • Students in welcoming schools had higher performance in reading than the year before, but not in math

  3. Attainment vs. Growth Attainment: How did students do at one point in time. The reference point (national average attainment) is the same for all students in each grade level. Growth: How did students improve from one year to the next? The reference point (national average growth) is different for each student based on their pretest score. • Growth scores are cohort-based, meaning students are measured against their individual performance in the previous year.

  4. Definitions Student-level measures • Average RIT score – An average the Spring 2014 RIT scores from each student. RIT scores are NWEA’s scale score values. • Percentage of students at or above national average attainment – the percentage of students whose 2014 RIT scores are equal to or greater than the national average RIT score for their grade-level. • Percentage of students meeting or exceeding national average growth – the percentage of students whose growth meets or exceeds the average national growth for students from the same grade-level with the same pretest RIT scores.

  5. Inclusions/Exclusions Included • Students in Grades 2-8 that took the NWEA MAP • For attainment measures, students that took the Spring SY2014 assessment • For growth measures, students that took both the Spring SY2014 assessment and either the Spring SY2013 or Fall SY2014 assessment as a pretest. • All school types (charter, magnet, selective enrollment, charter) Excluded • Students whose scores were invalidated by NWEA or CPS • Students taking the wrong assessment type or grade level • English Learners with an ACCESS Literacy score less than 3.5 at the time of the test. • Students expected to take the Illinois Alternative Assessment (IAA)
