  1. Literature Bellwork • Take out your other composition book (for literature). • Try to say “The Star-Spangled Banner” to your partner.

  2. Turn to the Story Information section of your literature composition book. • Write “Star-Spangled Banner” at the top of the first page. • Write the author’s name: Francis Scott Key. Then write three facts about him. • Under that, write the title “Vocabulary.”

  3. “Star-Spangled Banner” Vocabulary Spangled—referring to the bright stars sewn on the flag Hailed—salute with tribute Gleaming—shining or reflecting light Perilous—dangerous, involving danger or risk

  4. SSB Cont’d • Ramparts—wall of defense against attack usually circling a fort • Gallantly—brave, noble • Streaming—the flag blowing in the wind

  5. Paraphrase “The Star-Spangled Banner.” (To paraphrase, you should re-write each line using your own words. It should be about as long as the original.)
