  1. Welcome to…. HLTFA301B Apply First Aid

  2. Legal liability Significant legislation occurred in NSW in 2002 with the Civil Liability Act – this Act uses the term ‘good Samaritan’ which protects a person who assists another in a first aid setting from potential legal complications. Duty of Care…If you act in a paid or voluntary employment as a First Aid Officer, you have a duty to provide first aid services to those in your care.

  3. Tips for taking care of yourself and others… • Always assess for any potential dangers and ensure the area is safe before entering. • Use standard precautions to protect yourself from potential contact with blood and other body fluids. • Do not unnecessarily move the casualty or heavy objects • Observe and manage bystanders • Seek Professional counselling and debriefing, if required.

  4. FIRST AID KITS • It is essential that the first aid kit contents meet the special needs of the work environment. WorkCover NSW provides clear guidelines on the first aid supplies for specific industries

  5. Respiratory System

  6. Cardiovascular System

  7. In any first aid situationyou should…. • Stay calm • Assess the scene and ensure it is safe • Use the DRABCD Action Plan to determine your priorities • Call for help as soon as possible

  8. CALLING FOR HELP… • 000 is Australia’s primary emergency services number. Handing over to ambulance officers: Mechanism of injury or illness (what exactly happened Injuries (is patient injuried) Signs and symptoms (what info have you found) Treatment and time (what have you done)

  9. CPR When a casualty’s heart stops beating, this is known as cardiac arrest and the required first aid management is effective and immediate CPR. Some of the causes of cardiac arrest include heart attack, poisoning, electrocution and prolonged respiratory arrest. RESCUE + COMPRESSIONS = CPR BREATHS

  10. AED

  11. What is AED? • Automatic External Defibrillator: A device that can be used by anyone with a minimal amount of training to defibrillate someone whose heart has stopped. • AED is a computerised defibrillator which will analyse the victim’s heart rhythm and if a shockable rhythm is determined it will instruct the user to deliver an electric shock. The AED provides on-going voice prompts to the operator for Basic Life Support (BLS) and callling emergency services.

  12. Why is AED used? Research shows that: • Or every minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival decreases by approximately 10% • A casualty’s best chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is to receive a shock within 5 minutes of collapse.

  13. When is AED used? • In conjunction with BLS • At the earliest possible stage • Standard AED suitable for use in children only over 8 years of age • For children between 1 and 8 years (or under 25kg) – use paediatric pads/mode. • AED is not recommended for children less than 1 year.
