  2. Principal Biological Concepts to Emphasize: A. Protostome vs. deuterostome. B. Extremely diverse groups. C. Terrestrial adaptations of Arthropods. D. Serial homology. E. Evolution of flight. F. Metamorphosis. G. Detailed anatomy of the crayfish.

  3. Protostome vs. deuterostome. A. Mollusks and arthropods, as well as the Annelids we looked at last week, are protostomes. 1. Spiral and determinate cleavage 2. Blastopore (opening of the archenteron) becomes the mouth 3. Schizocoelous formation of the coelom B. We will look at deuterostome phyla next week (Echinodermata and Chordata) 1. Radial and indeterminate cleavage 2. Blastopore forms anus 3. Enterocoelous formation of coelom

  4. Early embryonic development

  5. Early development in protostomes and deuterostomes

  6. Phylum MOLLUSCA 1. Class Polyplacophora - chitons 2. Class Gastropoda - snails, slugs 3. Class Bivalvia - bivalves 4. Class Cephalopoda - octupus, squids

  7. Basic body plan of mollusks

  8. A chiton

  9. Garden snail

  10. The results of torsion in a gastropod

  11. Gastropods: Nudibranchs (top left and bottom left), terrestrial snail (bottom left), deer cowrie (bottom right)

  12. A bivalve: Scallop

  13. Anatomy of a clam

  14. Cephalopods: Squid (top left and bottom left), nautilus (top right), octopus (bottom right)

  15. Mussel heart xsec prepared (no. 11-1)

  16. Phylum ARTHROPODA 1. Subphylum Chelicerata a. class Merostomata - horseshoe crabs b. class Arachnida - spiders, ticks, scorpions 2. Subphylum Crustacea a. class Crustacea - aquatic arthropods - shrimp, lobsters, crabs, crayfish 3. Subphylum Uniramia a. class Insecta - flight b. class Chilopoda - centipedes c. class Diplopoda - millipedes

  31. Crayfish dissection A. WORK IN PAIRS. B. Photosheets are posted in lab. C. Dispose of crayfish in metal barrels in back of room.

  32. Insect identification - slides and dichotomous key. A. You must identify five (5) insect orders B. Hand this in before leaving lab as data sheet 2 (DS2 - 5 pts.) 1. Name 2. Slide box number 3. Slide number, insect order for each of 5 slides. C. Key to insect orders D. Don't share slide boxes. E. For lab practical - Don't need to know orders or the structures used in the key.

  33. Suggest you view “33A Characteristics of Invertebrates” on Student Media CD-ROM for review.

  34. Lab practical in three weeks. A. Sign up sheets available on-line beginning Monday, October 10. B. Review lab sessions - Saturday October 15 and Sunday October 16. C. Practical exams - Monday October 17 through Wednesday October 19. D. 30 stations E. 1 question per station F. 60 seconds per station G. NO GOING BACK H. Practical covers labs 1, 4, 5 and 7, in roughly equal proportions.
