The Group IV Project 2012 at ECA focuses on greening the school environment by reducing energy consumption and improving facility efficiency. Students will conduct observations, research current energy consumption, and find solutions for improvement. During the October break, they will investigate how other facilities address similar issues, such as heating swimming pools, to gather insights for ECA. The project involves documenting findings with notes, photos, and videos for presentation upon returning from the break.

Checking in - Group IV Project 2012:The Greening of ECA How to reduce our school’s impact on the environment
Where should your group be now? • With your group you will walk around ECA observing aspects of facility use and energy consumption that could be improved in terms of environmental impact. • You will need to document your observations by taking notes, photographs and videos. • You will research this particular aspect of ECA to determine current energy consumption and/or waste output to be able to recommend improvements. In progress…
What do we need to do over October break? • Find an example of how another facility deals with the same issue that you are investigating her at ECA.
Original sample problem proposed by Mr. Heil: I need to heat my swimming pool so that students will be comfortable during swimming lessons.
Find an example of a similar problem at a different facility. Hotel pool at your hotel on vacation.
Questions to ask: • What are the energy expenses of keeping this pool heated? • What measures has the hotel taken to decrease energy costs? • What are special considerations of this facility? • How can we use this new information to make recommendations for ECA? • Remember to DOCUMENT your research with photos and videos.
