Introduction Week 2 • Employers are self centered and self serving in that they go through the expense of the hiring process because it fills a need and in order to become whole they are willing to forfeit time and labor. They believe they will profit from the effort therefore they bear the expense. The competitive edge

  4. Job descriptions are a guide for staff planning, salary administration, recruiting/hiring, coaching, performance appraisal, and legal compliance. They sort out tasks, work flow and accountabilities, enabling businesses to plan how they will operate and grow.  Job descriptions also serve as documentation to help prevent, or defend against, discrimination complaints.  They provide written evidence that your employment decisions were based on a rational, business-needs oriented, legal foundation.   6. A t-bar is a low tech device that will help you to visualize your competitive position when researching a job description. T-Bar: what is it?

  7. A t-bar can be created using a column format like Excel, Word or scrawled on a piece of paper. T-Bar: What is it?

  8. The left side of a T-bar is labeled, “what they want.” Identify what employers have listed on job description. T-Bar: How to Use it. What they want • On this side of the T-bar : • List all the skills listed in a job description • In the order they are listed • Both hard and soft skills.

  9. The right side of a T-bar is labeled, “what you have.” Identify your skill sets that match what job skills an employer is asking for in the job description. T-Bar: How to Use it.
