  1. Long Baseline Neutrino Observatory & Particle Astrophysics Facility [Brunel, Durham, Sheffield, Sussex, AAE Ltd., e2v Ltd., Rhyal Ltd., Technodyne Ltd.] Motivation: UK leadership in global scale (0.1-1 Mton) Liquid Argon neutrino/PA detector Science discovery goals: (a) particle physics CP violation, neutrino mass hierarchy, ϑ13 nucleon decay, supernovae mechanism, dark matter (b) particle astrophysics geo-neutrinos, Earth science, underground engineering (c) geo & engineering • concordance with CERN, ASPERA roadmaps, PPAP/PAAP • single site in EU, US or Japan • global institutes involved: Europe LAGUNA-LBNO (45); USA LBNE (58); Japan T2O (20) Why LAr: Excellent ν energy resolution, sub GeV threshold, particle ID, low background but challenge for scale-up: (i) how to read-out charge with gain (ii) how to build tank and site Pioneering UK work Sheffield with Warwick Sheffield with AAE and Technodyne break-through in cavern/tank design and LAr purity break-through to show high gain optical readout in LAr N.J.C. Spooner, D. Tovey, NIM A554 (2005) 266 P.K. Lightfoot, N.J.C. Spooner AstropPhys. 27 (2007) 490 P.K. Lightfoot, N.J.C. Spooner JINST 4 (2009) P04002 N.J.C. Spooner, GLA2010, Tsukuba, Japan, Mar (2010) N.J.C. Spooner, LAGUNA report (2010) P.K. Lightfoot, N.J.C. Spooner JINST 3 (2008) P10001 PRD project aims: build on success to show feasibility of scale-up and physics capability (1) Optical Readout Concept in Liquid Argon - mainly academic partners: WP1 - Construction of Charge and Light Readout Plane [Sheffield] WP2 - Optical Coupling Concept and Electronics [Brunel, Sheffield, Sussex, e2v Ltd.] WP3 - Integration of the 1 m2 Device and Particle Tracking ID Assessment [Durham, Sheffield, Sussex] (2) Implications for Deployment Underground - mainly industrial partners: WP4 - Underground Design, Magnetisation and Liquid Purification [Sheffield, AAE, Rhyal, Technodyne] Collaborative context: PI is founding member/leader in LAGUNA, LBNO; member of LBNE • RD51 (charge readout at CERN) • RE18 (1 ton Argon at CERN, ETHZ) • T2K groups....... and links • Saclay • UCLA • ILL Grenoble New expertise Sussex [optics, ν physics] Brunel & e2v Ltd. [CCDs] Durham IPPP [LAr sensitivity]

  2. Finance Philosophy: PRD is glue to lever multiple non-STFC funds from universities & industry Long Baseline Neutrino Observatory & Particle Astrophysics Facility Key request: 18 month FTE RA; small staff FEC; fabrication and DAQ equipment; £7K T&S Key leverage: matching real non-STFC resources plus existing recycled capital infrastructure including : £43,792 from industry; 18 month PhD (AAE); university PhD/tech manpower; IPPP Durham Deliverable 1: full 1 m2 THGEM readout plane delivered (month 16) Main Deliverables: Deliverable 2: 1 m2 optical readout built, integrated with THGEM (month 17) T2K/Minos news! discovery of ϑ13? Deliverable 3: 2 m3 vessel commissioned with full optical readout (month 23) Deliverable 4: FINAL FEASIBILITY REPORT (month 24) Timeliness: LBNE expanding, LBNO backed by Europe, world-wide growth in LAr technology, capitalise on new UK position (academic AND industrial)
