  1. Salvation by Faith Only Romans 5:1 James 2:24

  2. Salvation by Faith Only • Definition of terms • History of faith-only doctrine • Why do some teach faith-only doctrine? • Scriptures that disprove faith-only

  3. Why do some teach the faith-only doctrine? • Romans 5:1 Paul teaches in one of our texts, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: • By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” • Romans 1:16-18: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;" • Romans 3:28: "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law." • Romans 4:5: "But to the one who worketh not, but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."

  4. The teaching does not stop here. • Jesus teaches in… • John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." • And again He teaches in… • John 6:28-29 (explainingMatthew 7:21): "Then said they unto Him, 'What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?' Jesus answered and said unto them, 'This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.'"

  5. Paul tells the Philippian jailor… • Acts 16:31: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." • In his account of his own conversion before Agrippa, Paul quotes the Lord as having said… • Acts 26:18: "To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me..."

  6. Paul further teaches… • Galatians 2:16: "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." • Galatians 2:21: "I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain." • Galatians 3: Several: "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, 'The just shall live by faith'. And the law is not of faith: but, 'The man that does them shall live in them'. … But the Scripture has concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. … Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, so that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.” • Galatians 5:4-5: "Christ has become of no effect to you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; you are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith." • Ephesians 2:8-10: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." • Philippians 3:9: "And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith."

  7. 10. Paul to Others… • Ephesians 2:8-10: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." • Philippians 3:9: "And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith."

  11. Scriptures that disprove faith-only • James 2:24-26 “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent [them] out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.“ • Matthew 7:21 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” • Matthew 16:27 “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.” • Romans 2:6-7;13 “Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, … 13 (For not the hearers of the law [are] just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

  12. 2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things [done] in [his] body, according to that he hath done, whether [it be] good or bad.” I John 2:3-5 “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.” Revelation 20:13 “And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.” Revelation 22:12 “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”
