  1. The Scarlet Letter Ch: 15-16 By: Isai Bracamontes, Anita Bracamontes, & Araceli Bocanegra

  2. Chapter 15 Summary • Throughout this chapter Hester finds herself hating Chillinworth. “Yes I hate him!” repeated Hester more bitterly than before. “He betrayed me! He has done me worse wrong than I did him!” (pg. 183-184). We also see Pearl’s desperation to know the significance of the letter “A” that her mother has worn for the past seven years and why reverend Dimmesdale always places this hand over his chest. Hester contemplates on whether to explain the significance to Pearl because she believes that she is still to young to comprehend.

  3. Chapter 16 Summary • Hester and Pearl go to the forest around the time they know Dimmesdale takes meditative walks. During their walk, Pearl questions her mother on whether she to will wear a letter on her bosom just as she does. Once again Hester refuses to answer Pearl’s question and sends her away by saying, “run away, child, and catch the sunshine! It will soon be gone.”(pg. 191-192). As they are in the forest Hester hears someone walking nearby and she sends Pearl away knowing that it is Dimmesdale coming. Hester and Dimmesdale talk for the first time in seven years. There she reveals the truth about chillingsworth.

  4. Theme: • Curiosity- Pearl demonstrates curiosity throughout these chapters when she repeatedly asks what is the significance of the letter “A”. When there is curiosity there is frustration because you might not get the answer. • Guilt- Hester feels guilt because she did not reveal Chillingworth’s true identity. Universally applies when there is so much guilt that leads to regret.

  5. Romantic and Puritan Ideas: • Romantic – The romantic idea of theses chapter is when Hester and Dimmesdale confront each other in the forest and they talk for the first time in a long time. • Puritan – The fact that a puritan had committed a sin such as adultery was a great issue. As a reveren and as a leader we would expect Dimmesdaleto be an example for the towns people but yet her also committed a great sin.

  6. Character Analysis • Pearl – In these chapter pearl shows a lot of curiosity. She wants to know the significance of the scarlet letter that her mother has had on her bosom for the past seven years. • Hester – In theses chapters Hester is full of hatred because she knows what Chillingworth has been doing to Dimmesdale. She quotes, “Yes I hate him!”.

  7. Literary Devices • Irony – The reverend being sinful by committing adultery. We expect our church leaders to be the perfect role models. • Narrative Voice – The narrative voice in chapter 15 is strong because in this chapter it starts to express a little more of Hester’s hate towards Chillingworth. • Symbolism and Color – Isolation • Mood – The mood in chapter 15 is very tense and it is full of hate because that’s the chapter that Hester shows how much she is starting to hate Chillingworth.

  8. Quiz • How many years has Hester worn the scarlet letter? • Why does Hester not want to tell Pearl the significance of the scarlet letter? • Who does Hester refer to when she quotes, “ I hate the man!”? • Who does Pearl and Hester confront in the forest? • What is pearl so curious about?
