  1. Garbage Dump or Buffet: Librarian Adoption of Web-Scale Discovery Services Cheri Duncan Director, Acquisitions & Cataloging James Madison University Libraries

  2. Garbage Dump or Buffet Facilitator Anna Creech, University of Richmond Panelists Cheri Duncan, James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA) Sommer Browning, Auraria Library (Denver, CO) Jenifer Holman, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Joelle Thomas, University of Connecticut

  3. Garbage Dump or Buffet Implementation • What prompted library to consider discovery? • The need to compete with Google • To break down silos and provide a single point to find and access resources, particularly for library collections • How was the discovery service rolled out? • For at least one library, it was a mandate from administration with little or no opportunity for input from or preparation of library staff • For others a group or department was tasked with implementing discovery • Some solicited input and feedback during a gradual roll-out while others were more pressed on the implementation and couldn’t be as thoughtful • Where is the discovery service found on library website? • All the panelists’ libraries have a single search box on home page

  4. Garbage Dump or Buffet Staff Response • How well was discovery service received? • Responses varied from institution to institution, but staff in those libraries which sought input and cultivated buy-in during both the investigation and the implementation processes were the most receptive • How is discovery service being used or not used by desk(s)? In instruction? • Most service desks are using discovery as a first step during the consultation process, but not for known items or more specific searches • In instruction, librarians do teach when to use the “single search box” and when to utilize other tools and resources • Librarians stress use of discovery as an appropriate tool for undergraduates, but not usually appropriate for graduate, higher level, or topic-intensive research • STM and Social Science librarians tend to emphasize the use of the discovery service more than Arts & Humanities librarians

  5. Garbage Dump or Buffet Reflections • Would you implement discovery again and, if so, what would you do differently? • Unanimous “Yes” • More time and thought with the investigation and implementation • Solicit more buy-in and input from public services staff and librarians and departmental faculty

  6. Garbage Dump or Buffet Reflections • What are some of the shortcomings of discovery services? How would you like to see them improved? • Better “known” item searching • More customization and local control over relevancy ranking, facets, and other features • Consistent and better quality metadata • Deeper links into ILS for checking out items, patron account features, etc. Discovery will never be perfect, but often it is “good enough”.

  7. Garbage Dump or Buffet Thank You!
