  2. Statement Of The Problem It is becoming an increasing concern that the wishes of patients are not followed. The public seems to be developing a growing distrust of the medical profession (Webb-Pelope, 2001).

  3. Research Questions How many patients in the Northern Virginia area were resuscitated that had a DNR order in place? What are the reasons that the DNR orders were not followed? What can be done to ensure occurrences like this do not happen again?

  4. The true purpose of this study is to answer one main question therefore, it is felt that a more quantitative approach is necessary. The study will take on a non-experimental design due to the fact that there are no variables that can be manipulated. It will be descriptive in that statistics will be reported as they relate to the study itself. Data Collection Patient Monitoring- patients admitted with or that obtain DNR orders Chart Reviews- patients with DNR orders who were resuscitated or received life-sustaining measuresin past year Interview- structured open and closed ended questions Methodology

  5. Findings Due to time constraints of the class, this study was not carried out to completion. It is in the opinion of the researcher that if carried out, the study would show that at least thirty percent of patients with DNR orders were given life-sustaining care or cardiopulmonary resuscitation. So for an example to clarify, if one thousand DNR patients were followed, thirty percent or three hundred of the patients would receive CPR or life sustaining measures.

  6. Conclusion Overall, it is human dignity that we are trying to respect. Human error we are trying to lessen or even eliminate. The health care system is becoming less and less about patient care and more about numbers and dollars. It truly is no wonder that the medical profession is becoming increasingly mistrusted. Who’s dignity are we respecting?
