Overview • Advance computation-enabled and data-enabled research by Penn State faculty • Support interdisciplinary research groups as they prepare to pursue major awards from external granting agencies • Grants are also available to support the organization of a national or international research conference

  3. Themes • ICS is particularly interested in proposals related to the 'Driving Digital Innovation' section of the PSU strategic plan: • Health • General Methodology • Environment and Energy

  4. Timeline • Submit window December 4, 2017 – January 19, 2018 • Announcement of award or rejection in March of 2018

  5. Requirements • ICS Seed Grants will be awarded to projects that: • Facilitate the development of competitive proposals to external funding agencies • Pursue significant research efforts and/or initiatives, such as establishment of centers of excellence • Enhance the visibility of Penn State

  6. Types of Awards • Up to $35K – Multi-college projects involving ICS Associates (including co-hires) • Up to $25K – Multi-college projects • Up to $10K – Single-college projects involving multiple faculty • Up to $5K – Single-college projects from a single faculty member • Up to $4K - Conference award

  7. Eligibility • PI must be full-time tenure line or research faculty with a multi-year appointment • Faculty members who received an ICS Seed Grant in 2016 or 2017 (either as the PI or co-PI) are not eligible for an award in 2018

  8. Review Criteria • Alignment with ICS and PSU priorities • Research strengths: • Science strengths • CyberScience strengths • Potential/Sustainability

  9. Review Process (35K – 10K) • Criterion 1 will be reviewed by ICS leadership (director and associate directors) • Criteria 2 and 3 will be peer reviewed by ICS affiliated faculty • Each proposal will receive at least 2 independent reviews. Each of the criteria will be weighted equally. • In case of conflicting reviews, an additional review will be performed by a member of the community or by the ICS leadership

  10. Review Process (4K – 5K) • Likely reviewed only by ICS leadership (director and associate directors) • Depending on the number of submissions, reviews may be performed by members of the ICS community
