  1. CCR Task 1 By Hollie Potter

  2. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

  3. What is a convention? • In terms of media, a convention would be the characteristics/elements within a film that contribute to the overall stereotype of the genre. For example, in a horror film you would tend to see .. • Low-key lighting • Dark colour schemes • Weapon action codes

  4. Genre – Drama

  5. Conventions of drama

  6. How we challenged that • In most drama films there is a sense of a ‘happy ever after’ however, with ‘To Max’ we plan on challenging this as in reality, depression and suicide is not always an easy discussion, and it would be unrealistic not to address the harsh reality of mental health.

  7. Influencers • My main influences were ‘Beautiful Boy’ by Felix Van Groeningen and Avengers Endgame 2019 (Tony starks funeral scene)

  8. Mise en scene - Costume • Naturalistic • Soft colour palette – contrast to dark features. • Clean and crisp – contributes to the conventions of drama.

  9. Mise en scene - Props We included props, such as an envelope, a stopwatch and a photograph to create enigma. We ensured to keep the camera focused, enabling a clear shot of the objects. We also incorporated close-up shots with the intent to signify to the audience that the objects are important within the film.

  10. Mise en scene - Lighting Our lighting was heavily influenced by ‘Beautiful Boy’. Consists of a natural, earth toned pallet.

  11. Mise en scene - setting • The setting can be drawn similar to both films. • Especially compared against Avengers: End game due to it being set within a family home. • The use of the fireplace connotes feelings of warmth, however, with the fire being burned out there is a sense of coldness. The lack of fire symbolizes what once was.

  12. Camera work • In our opening sequence we incorporated the use of … - Close up angles (to show actor’s expression) • Low angles (to show paternal authoritative figure) • Fathers monologue delivered through a tape

  13. Sound • Non diegetic music • Fathers monologue

  14. Editing • Jump cuts • Match on action • 180-degree rule • Continuity • Shot reverse shot • Eye line match • Pace – blend of tension and stillness • Fade in and out

  15. Representation Gender (male audience) Age (15+) Nationality (UK) Mental health (anyone who can identify)
