This project investigates how different music genres affect heart rate during physical activity. Participants ran on treadmills listening to hardcore and easy listening music, with rest intervals. Results showed decreased heart rate with easy listening and little effect with hardcore. Recommendations included more participants, music variety, trial/rest timing adjustments, and course change.

Hypothesis • The type of music effects heart rate during physical activity.
Variables • Independent Variable The type of music • Dependent Variable Heart rate Types of Music Hardcore and easy listening music
Experiment • Two people each ran for two minutes on treadmills for three different trials, with two minutes of rest in between. • Trial 1 : no music • Trial 2: hardcore music- “T.N.T.”-ACDC • Trial 3: easy listening music- “Hey Jude”-The Beatles
Data • Brandon’s data
Data • Susannah’s data
Results • During the experiment we found that the heart rate decreased when listening to easy listening kind of music. On the other hand during the hardcore trial we found that it had little effect upon the heart rate. We used trial 1 as the control.
Conclusion What would we change? • A larger group of participants • A wider variety in the kind of music • The length of trials/resting period • Change of running course
