Where is Jersey? • Jersey is one of the best known and most successful small islands of the world. • The most southerly of the British Isles, some 100 miles south of England, but just 12 miles off the coast of France. • Jersey is not part of the UK, nor a member of the European Union, and has its own elected legislative assembly, fiscal and legal system and Courts

  3. About Jersey • Jersey has a fascinating history, with cultural links to France and the United Kingdom • Originally part of Normandy, Jersey has been loyal to the English Crown since 1204. • It is a peaceful and tranquil island, yet shaped by struggles and reinvention

  5. Challenges and success • Change and innovation have characterised Jerseys way of life. • 17th century: economy based on agriculture and sheep rearing. This led to the creation of a knitted garment known as a ‘jersey’. • 18th century: boat building and the creation of a fishing fleet. • Late 19th century: emergence of the Jersey Dairy brand and the Jersey Royal potato. The Jersey cow is protected as a pure breed within the island.

It is recognised internationally for: • Its stable jurisdiction and professionalism • Well-regulated, transparent and co-operative finance centre

  7. Possible conference theme The conference aims to explore the challenges facing many of the small islands of the world; how they have been or may in the future be able to respond effectively to change and turn difficulties to their advantage.

Conference venue • Most conference events will take place in Hautlieu School, which is adjacent to the University Centre on the Highlands campus. • The main facilities at this venue are: • Conference plenary hall (Seats up to 400) • Lecture Theatre with full video projection (Seats up to 110) • 15 break-out rooms with audio visual presentation facilities • Catering and refreshment areas • Large exhibition areas in the main thoroughfare (‘the street’) • Internet wi-fi connection

Hotels The recommended hotel for this proposed meeting site is the Hotel de France. • Conveniently located near the conference venue • Outskirts of the town St. Helier • 284 bedrooms, with a choice of bars and leisure facilities • Also offers supplementary conference facilities Other accommodation is available to suit all budgets.
