  1. Current developments of the CLRTAP Gothenburg protocol Stefan Åström, IVL

  2. The set, but flexible, commitments, agreed 4th of May 2012

  3. Current developments of GBG protocol • A final text is being produced by UNECE • EU-countries are preparing to ratify the protocol • The flexibility mechanism in the GBG protocol will not be used by the majority of the countries within the EU • More countries are expected to join the protocol after the finalisation of the revised protocol text • The commitment level of the GBG protocol was set low in an effort to meet a relatively even ambition level of countries • However, the EU countries are raising the ambition levels in the revision of the EU air pollution legislation • UNECE continues to work with PMBC • EU is discussing the possibility to update the amendments of the protocol

  4. For the Russian Federation? • In 2012 the Russian Federation indicated a 5 % reduction in emissions • Other countries are hoping for Russia to join the revised protocol • Russian joining will imply a strong encouragement to other countries to raise the ambition
