  1. Module #4Niccolo Machiavelli : The Prince Eboni Walker

  2. Summary of The Prince • The main point of the reading was to answer the question of whether it is better for a prince to be loved or feared. • Inevitably it was decided that a prince needs to have a balance of love and fear. • If an individual fears someone to much, they are likely to rebel against the leader. If someone loves a leader to much they may not take that leader as seriously as they should. • To much of either does not help the leader achieve their goals.

  3. Summary of The Prince • The text states that the only time a prince should be cruel is when in command of an army. • This cruelty unites the army. It is better to be on the side that is feared then the side that is afraid. • The author used Hannibal as an example. Hannibal’s army was comprised of different races and nations of men. During this time he never had dissension amongst his men. Because they feared and respected him of his cruel ways. • A prince has to contrive to stay away from hatred.

  4. Application (1) • Some believe that leadership can be taught while some people believe leaders are born. • Without followers a person is not a leader. • This is where the topic of The Prince comes into play. • A thought that came to mind during this reading was that there was no mention of women/princesses. • In the writing Women and the Labyrinth of Leaders it is pointed out that women are not mentioned in terms of leaders.

  5. Application (2) • It is important that a leader understands the people that they are leading. • A person cannot expect for people to follow him or her if that person cannot relate to them. • All of the readings from this module explain a different aspect of leadership. • In my opinion leadership cannot be taught but it is natural. • You cannot teach someone to be charismatic and relatable. At the same time those who are not born leaders they are still important as followers. • Followers allow the leaders to get what they need done.

  6. Application (3) • The Prince is only a small portion of what leaders have to deal with. • A prince is also only what kind of leader. • When a person is a prince, they are born into this role. • For many other leaders they acquire there role through hard work and the approval of others. • Leaders and followers are both play an equally important role.

  7. Example of a leader • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smEqnnklfYs • The above clip is of a great leader, Martin Luther King Jr. He was loved and respected by millions, even to this day. He united people with a common goal. He made a change in the world that is still prevalent today. He was a leader of many men, women, and children. He was the kind of leader many wish they could be.
