  3. Simple Sentence • A simple sentence is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. • The word simplemeans “one subject-verb pair”, not “easy.” • Example • Iam your father. • He and she is a student. • My sister speaks and writes English well.

  4. Connecting Words : and, or • Connecting words are called conjunction. • And joins two or more similar things in positive sentences. • ex) I hatesojuand white wine. • OR connects two or more similar things in negative sentences. • ex) I don’t like sojuor white wine. • OR also connects two or more choices or alternatives.

  5. Compound Sentence • A compound sentence is two simple sentences connected by a comma and a coordinating conjunction. • Compound sentences formula: • S.S.,Coordinating ConjunctionS.S. [fanboys] = (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) • Example • Next year we will go to the beach, or we will stay at home. • We want to buy a house soon, so we need to save money.

Coordinating Conjunction • And connects two sentences with similar ideas. • ex) I don’t like white wine, and Uju doesn’t like cat food. • But connects two sentences with contrasting or opposite idea. • ex) I have never been to Russia, but my best friend has. • OR connects two sentences that express alternative or choices. • ex) We will eat either Italy food, or we will eat Korean food. • SO connects a reason and a result. • ex) He works a lot, so he doesn’t go out very often.

Complex Sentence • An independent clause is just another name for a simple sentence. • A dependent clause is an independent clause with a subordinating word, added to the beginning of it. • ex) ... because Paris has excellent art museums … • Complex sentences formula: • d.c,i.c/ i.cd.c • ex) After we finished our homework, we watched TV. [d.c , i.c] • ex) Art students should visit Paris because it has excellent art museums. [i.cd.c]

  8. Organization • When you write a description, you tell what something looks like. • 1. Person • 2. Place • 3. Thing • Two keys to writing good description. • Use space order to organize your description. • Use lots of descriptive details. • Kinds of space order • ex) top to bottom, right to left, far to near, outside to inside ...
