A bit more historical information • Elizabethan society was much different to today: it was Patriarchal. • Men ruled every aspect of life and had complete control over the women in their family. Women would not dare disobey: they would be disowned and have nowhere to go. • Women stayed at home. They were not educated and did not work. • Once a marriage had been consummated, the wedding vows were sacred and the woman belonged to the man. Linking this to the story …
