Brief History of Computer Science in the College of Arts & Sciences • 1960s: first UVa CS courses offered, in the College (Alan Batson) • since <2000: Computer Science exemption (CS courses count as CLAS courses) • 2003: Non-Degree CLAS CS program • Fall 2005: BACS Committee Formed • Spring 2006: Interdisciplinary Major in Computer Science Approved

  3. BACS Students 2010 SEAS CS: 40? 2008 SEAS CpE: 35 66 currently active majors

  4. Future Plans • 18 May 2008 (12:30): First CS Graduation • Gilmer Hall 190 • 14 Students (3 already graduated in 2007) • [update from Peggy] • Replace Interdisciplinary Major with stand-alone BA Computer Science degree • More clear status and visibility • Opportunity to acquire resources

Resources (to be requested) • Four CLAS Faculty positions • Four CS faculty positions (including 1 general faculty) • One administrative assistant • 6 GTAs: Spring: 2 for cs150, 1 for cs415, 3 for other CS courses; Fall: 1 for cs150, 1 for cs205, 4 for other CS courses • $5000/semester for Undergraduate TAs
