Aim and objectives of the project • Aim: • improvement of transport connection conditions in the southern region of Ukraine by increasing the traffic performance of M-14 highway; • improvement of the efficiency of transportation between the seaports in Odessa and Mykolaiv regions of Ukraine and other countries of the European Union; • reduction of anthropogenic impact on the environment of Mykolaiv city by unloading of transport streams that run through the city center; • increasing of the investment attractiveness of the Mykolaiv city and Mykolaiv region by the development of transport infrastructure. • Objectives : • construction of a bridge over the river Southern Buh in Mykolaiv; • construction of bypass roads to increase the traffic performance. 3

  4. The existing conditions of road transport traffic • The existing bridge over the river Southern Buh was built in 1964 and is located on the main road M-14 Odessa-Melitopol-Novoazovsk. • Currently, the road runs along the left bank of the river, on the territory of the city Mykolaiv, passes across Southern Buh river by the city drawbridge, on the right bank goes through the village Varvarovkathat is part of the Mylolaiv city. • Transit cargo road transport combining with urban traffic flows leads to a sharp worsening of traffic conditions, decay of speed of traffic, traffic jams, increases number of accidents, noise and gas pollution of the city. • During the opening of drawbridge for the passage of ships, traffic movement of vehicles which are crossing the bridge stops completelybetween the right-bank and left bank of the city. • The nearest bridge across the Southern Buh river is located in the city Voznesensk, 90 km upstream of the river. 4

  6. The main technical and economic indicators of the bridge in prices of 2013 • The total construction cost - 3,5 bln. UAH including: • The cost of the bridge - 1,7 bln. UAH. • The cost of construction works - 2.7 bln. UAH. • The total length of the bridge with access roads - 13.2 km including : • The bridge length - 2050 m • Category of the road - I (B) with four traffic lanes •  Road junction - 2 •  Bridges - 10 •  Estimated traffic - 34,175 cars/day •  Bridge construction period - 5 years 6

  7. Environmentally friendly building The project provides: • The withdrawal of transit traffic out of the city and improvement of the ecological environment of Mykolaiv city and surrounding areas • Significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere by reducing of travel time and sustainable transport speed • Building of the new bridge does not influence the ecosystem of Southern Buh river and does not create additional limitations for shipping 7
