What is Vacuum Casting? vacuum or urethane casting is a process used to make production-quality parts from thermoplastics, resins or rubbers without compromising on lead time or cost this process uses soft silicone moulds, eliminating the cost or lead time required for production tooling. So, it's ideal for creating a small series of parts (e.g for prototyping) vacuum casting produces accurate and durable parts that also make great visual models due to a high-quality ?nish

How does Vacuum Casting work? step 1: build a master model typically using CNC or 3D printing, a master model is made, sanded, painted and primed to achieve the desired surface texture and quality. the model must be ?awless as every detail will be replicated in the parts step 2: creating the silicone mould tool the model is suspended in a casting box in which liquid silicone is poured, and the material is left to cure. once solidi?ed, the master model removed, leaving a cavity for casting the ?nal parts step 3: producing the parts the cavity is ?lled with polyurethane evenly, and the mould sealed and left to cure at 70 celcius. The part is then cooled, removed and any post- processing carried out. This process can repeated 10-20 times per mould

Advantages of Vacuum Casting excellent surface ?nish: colours and surface ?nishes can be easily added, therefore great for aesthetic purposes shorter lead times: making silicone moulds takes only days when compared to steel or aluminium moulds which take weeks lower upfront investment: vacuum casting requires a lower tooling investment compared to injection moulding large components: cast large parts in a single build, without the need to join them together. HLH can easily cast 2 meter parts

Disadvantages of Vacuum Casting high-volume solutions: vacuum casting is restricted to low-volume production due to the soft mould material and subsequent warping of the mould after too many uses loose tolerance: despite engineer's best efforts to predict and improve the shrinkage rate, it will remain around 0.15%. so, vacuum casting isnt suitable for high precision parts dependence on master model: craftmanship and attention to detail is important in vaccum casting. if theres a problem with the master, it will appear in each resulting part
