  1. Future of EDM John Sinclair 22-Sep-2016

  2. Origin • EDM came to be as the result of a similar issue facing current users today • HRIBF was porting VSystem-base controls to EPICS • MEDM seemed to be the DM of choice but there were significant differences • MEDM developer had no time to add new features, hence birth of EDM

  3. Effort • First version created in 6 weeks working at home in the evenings • EPICS was not yet freely available • Needed to use whatever free software was available, hence GPL • image processing • curl • First version supported Vsystem • Total effort over last 14 years < 2 man years

  4. Great Fun • Became aware of EPICS community • Most of what I consider to be the nicest features in EDM came from the community • So many opportunities to learn • Many interesting ideas • Wealth of practical experience • Great memories from past collaborations

  5. Conversion Woes • Operators spend many hours cramming as much information as possible on a large set of screens that become their OPIs of choice • For these, automatic conversion to BOY doesn’t always succeed • Converting one busy screen that EDM loads in 2-4 seconds resulted in an OPI file that took over 1 minute to render • Manual conversion is the sometimes the only option

  6. Roadmap • Add a few features that have been recently requested • What then? • Spend effort not on building converters but on conversion assistants • Examine caQtDM • Very nice piece of work • Will it support enough edm behavior to make the conversion doable?

  7. Roadmap • Create a widget-toolkit independent version of EDM with various new major features • Support BOY OPI files? • Create a Qt version of EDM • This already exists for an older EDM version (a few widgets not yet implemented) • Took about one month (elapsed time) to complete

  8. More Questions than Answers • Thanks for listening • Questions?
